Well we knew that it was going to be hot and we had some new tunes to try out and it was all very adventurous but nothing ventured........
Nothing gained !!! The Boom Boom is always special to us as it followed on directly from one of Pete feenstra real gems The Worcester Park Tavern. When that folded pete had to think real quick to find yet another amazing venue and he managed it alright and some. Without doubt the Boom Boom Club is truly our home gig and the one where we have had some of our best nights. i arrive early to find Mickey Simmonds, and then the other guys arrive in a steady stream but it is never enough time as someone is always late and we have to rehearse the new numbers as promised. Johnny Marter has a great idea for a song The Last Time by the stones and shows John Kennard our guitar player exactly how to play it and which tone and pickup to use !!! This is no put down on john Kennard as johnny Marter is a musical expert and knows a hell of a lot especially about 60's stuff !!! and would equally tell any of us if it made for a correct performance and so it was. It took barely 5 minutes i guess in total as I knew the song inside out but I have an inherent problem in that back when these songs first came out I would identify what i thought the main melody was, and that was it. However Spike Edney was the first to discover it and promptly told me what my problem was...."Your a melody bandit" he said, and it is so hard to rediscover melody stuff that you have been singing religiously but also wrongly for all those years and to correct it !!! Johnny managed to let me sing what I have always sung and the others worked around it. We also learned Losing You by The Faces and we have been performing "Hold your head up" the Argent song and that went down brilliantly. From the moment we walked on stage I sensed that it would indeed be hot but also that there would be some highlights and it really took off and suddenly it was over? however they must have been feeling good and enjoying themselves as we over ran by 20 minutes but everyone had a real ball and what a crowd....Our loyal front row were rocking it out led by Lynn and they were moshing up the back by the second number !!! It was truly a brilliant gig and one i will not forget for a long time. Highlights....? For me it was " Jumping Jack Flash" again learnt and taught by Johnny Marter in moments, the Last time roared through and was magnificent, The crowd reaction and singing on Sympathy was staggering in its intensity.....What were you guys on?? All or nothing was fantastic as was Itchycoo Park and lastly Kindest regards Johnny x |
